Diversion Routes

It is recommended that all motorists avoid roads in the Docklands and Southbank areas including West Gate Fwy (westbound) and Olympic Park Precinct between 7:00am and 11:00am.

A number of diversion routes will be established to manage traffic across the city while the road closures are in place for the event. These diversion routes are detailed below.

West Gate Fwy (from West Gate Bridge) to Tullamarine Fwy

Primary Diversion Route - Montague Street

Bolte Bridge (northbound) will be closed between approximately 7:00am and 11:00am, whilst the Footscray Road exit from the Bolte Bridge (northbound) will be closed from 3:00am 11:00am.

Vehicles that are travelling to CityLink (north) / Tullamarine Freeway will be directed to use the Montague Street exit. These vehicles can then use Dynon Road (via Montague Street, Wurundjeri Way, Dudley Street and Spencer Street (north of Dudley Street) to rejoin CityLink at the Dynon Road entry ramp.

Over dimensional vehicles can use the Wurundjeri Way and Footscray Road section of OD5 and turn right into Dock Link Road to access Dynon Road (due to height restrictions on Dudley Street).

Monash Fwy to Tullamarine Fwy and West Gate Fwy

Primary Diversion Route - Punt Road

The Domain Tunnel will be closed the night preceding the event for maintenance, therefore prior to the closure of Swan Street at 7:30am, traffic destined for the West Gate Bridge will be diverted using the Standard Diversion Routes of Punt Road (Boulton Parade) exit, Swan Street, City Road, Power Street and the West Gate Freeway.

When Swan Street is closed at Punt Road at 7:30am, motorists will enter Punt Road from CityLink in a northbound direction and use the standard City Bypass Route to Flemington Road and CityLink to get to the Tullamarine Freeway. It is noted that the rail bridge over Punt Road north of Swan Street has low clearance of 4.3m.

After the re-opening of Swan Street and Batman Avenue at approximately 9:45am it is recommended that motorists access the West Gate Freeway using City Road, Montague Street, Williamstown Road and Todd Road, until the Domain Tunnel and West Gate Freeway re-opens at 10:30am.

Trucks will be advised to access Williamston Road via Clarendon Street and Normanby Rd due to the low bridges on City Road (west of Clarendon Street) and Montague Street.

Warrigal Road - Heavy Vehicle, Over Dimensional and Dangerous Goods Route

Over Dimensional vehicles will be advised via Variable Message Signs (VMS) to exit the Monash Freeway at Warrigal Road and connect to OD5 at South Road. It is expected that Over Dimensional and Dangerous Goods vehicle drivers will be aware of the OD5 route. Where the OD5 route intersects with Williamstown Road, vehicles will be directed to turn left into Williamstown Road and enter West Gate Freeway from Todd Road.

Springvale Road - Over Dimensional and Dangerous Goods Route

Vehicles travelling from the Monash Freeway to the Hume Highway will be advised via permanent and temporary VMS boards to exit the Monash Freeway at Springvale Road to connect to OD1 at Springvale Road.

Swan Street - Holding Bay

In the event that vehicles over 4.3m are travelling on the Punt Road approach to Swan Street during the closure of the Swan Street Bridge they will be directed to wait in Swan Street until the bridge is re-opened. It is anticipated that these vehicles will be held on the southern side of the carriageway, immediately west of the Punt Road intersection.

Westbound Traffic on Kings Way

Primary Diversion Route - Moray Street

The West Gate Freeway westbound on-ramp at Kings Way will be closed between approximately 7:00am and 10:30am. Motorists will be advised that West Gate Freeway access is only available at Todd Road. Motorists will be directed to turn into Moray Street (northbound), turn left into City Road, turn right into Montague Street, turn left into Normanby Road and turn right into Todd Road to gain access to the West Gate Bridge.

Trucks will be advised to access Williamston Road via Clarendon Street and Normanby Rd due to the low bridges on City Road (west of Clarendon Street) and Montague Street.

Northbound Traffic on Kings Way

Primary Diversion Route - King Street

The West Gate Freeway westbound on-ramp at Kings Way will be closed between approximately 7:00am and 10:30am. Motorists travelling to the Tullamarine Freeway can use King Street, Dudley Street and Spencer Street to access CityLink from Dynon Road. Alternatively, use King St, Curzon St and Flemington Rd to access CityLink from the Flemington Rd entry ramp.

It is noted that the rail bridge over King Street (north of Yarra River) has a low clearance of 4.3m.

City Access during the Event

Due to the extent of the Event, vehicle access in the south and western parts of the CBD area and surrounds will be restricted between 7am and 12pm.

In particular, Flinders Street, Spencer Street, Batman Avenue and St Kilda Road (north of Park Street) will be inaccessible between these times, and access to Southbank will be limited. Kings Way, Punt Road and Wurundjeri Way will provide north-south access to and through the CBD.

Note: King Street and Punt Road have low clearance 4.3m bridges.

Docklands Access during the Event

Due to the extent of the Event, vehicle access to Docklands will be restricted between 7am and 12pm. Access to and from the entire Docklands precinct will be provided via Batmans Hill Drive from Wrundjeri Way.
